January 10th, 2004

This gig sucked second hardest. The only positive things about it were that i was able to bring some of my Boston keyboards to the gig, so i had the ability to play all of my normal parts. I was only missing my stands and pedals, and other assorted things that enable me to play.
We arrived a little late to the venue, due to another of our habitual late starts. Crammed into the vehicles (available seats = 7) were the full band (5), Jess, Kirsten, Q, Slim, and ex-Lowfive-merch-monger and current Sean-Higgins-to-be James Martin (that just about covers our fanbase...). Upon arrival i was overjoyed to learn that over the course of the previous night, the band had managed to lose our cashbox, our briefcase, and the entire merch-stock of buttons... even after i'd pleaded with them to check the Skybar before they left for the night.
Silent Effect was playing when we got there, and were rocking the house sufficiently. Next up was Letterday, who maintained the previous state of rocking-ness. We were on third, and people seemed kind of excited to hear us, even though we were about 5-10 years older than the other bands (that's what we get for being Maine-based). Our set was better than last night's, but was still quite sloppy. People seemed pretty into us at first, but the novelty wore off about halfway through the set. I can't say i blame them, comparing us to the other bands (and looking at our setlist). But hey, we've had worse gigs before.
After us was Highland High. I really liked these guys, mostly because i got to see a fellow Keyboardist/Synth player. They sounded a lot like early Get Up Kids stuff, and were pretty tight on top of that. I wouldn't mind seeing these guys again, hopefully on a road trip up to Maine. Following hot on their heals were my buds in The Thrift Syndicate. I was parked over near the merch table for the set, so i couldn't watch as closely as would've, if there wasn't a wall of people blocking my view. But they sounded pretty sweet, and that's what counts in the end. They too will return to Maine.
The night wasn't an entire bummer, as we were able to disrespect Sean Higgins once again by buying him a gallon of cheap fruit punch instead of his requested lemon snapple. Moments like this make the long, Higgins-inclusive car ride worthwhile.

caleb.
